Hello. As you'd guess I'm new here and want to teach myself the art of Parkour. While I've read articles on how to begin training, I'd prefer to gather a mixed bag of ideas in one place based off your experiences and set a realistic amount of training per week for myself.
I think seeing these answers will help me and other people to understand what needs to be done before they can get their hands dirty by seeing if they can comparing themselves to you lot when you were in our shoes.
I know that my experiences will not be exactly the same but since we're all human, I'm sure we newbies will have SOMETHING in common. I'd personally like to see if anyone managed to transform themselves from a binge-drinking couch potato (exaggeration) to being on par with the people they jam with. I already have an athletic build but finding a living example of someone who wasn't sure they were capable, to being good enough to feel satisfied with their level of skill would really give me and other beginners a lot of hope.
Whether or not that's the case I'd appreciate it if every experienced person that sees this takes the time to answer. I'd also appreciate it if you number the answers appropriately so I don't get mixed up half-way through somehow:
1. How old were you when you started Parkour (and how long ago was that)?
2. In a few sentences, when you ventured into Parkour, how physically fit would you have described yourself? Above or below average height? Fat or skinny? Strong or weak? Maybe add examples of things you were already capable of ect.
3. Did you have anything like gymnastic training beforehand or were you more like a blank canvas?
4. When starting out, did both your strength and technique training consist of organised routines or did they vary each time? Also how often did you train and for how long per session?
5. How long was it before you moved from basics onto some of the more advanced (or some would call scary) techniques? Was their much trial and error involved before you could pull some of them off?
6. What would you have done differently or where did you go wrong in your early days? Did you not focus enough on certain aspects? Did anything slow down your progress? Eat the wrong food? (if you can't think of anything important, try nitpicking)
7. When learning something you're not sure about, it's common sense to have someone around incase something goes terribly wrong. Even when doing the things you're already good at, did you still ALWAYS have someone else around to keep an eye out?
8. Did you already know other Traceurs in person when you began or was you by yourself? How much did they help you along the way?
9. What technique did you learn first? Rolling from falls? Vault varients? Using walls to gain height? And so on. What would be better is if you could list the order you picked them up in so we can see how many other people went the same way.
I know I might be giving you a lot to type but it might save some new people walking away from Parkour with their tail between their legs. Aferall, this section is likely the place people will look first. Thanks for the effort in advance. ;D
